The Indiana State Museum (ISM) and its affiliated historic sites work to preserve and protect Indiana historical and archaeological resources. The museum itself contains exhibits examining the state's prehistory, history, and culture. The ISM received its first true home in the old City Hall in 1967 before moving into its current building in 2002.

The museum houses several collections pertinent to the state such as the Prehistoric Archaeology collection (which includes around 30,000 artifacts and specimens). Collections started at the ISM as far back as the early 1860's. It has also acquired collections from the historic sites presently under their guidance as well as from multiple generous donations.
