The vast St. Vincent’s Orphanage in Vincennes, Knox County, Indiana, became home to the O’Neill children. Because the of the migrations prompted by the Great Depression, the 1940 U.S. Census asked individuals about their residence in 1935. Patrick, age 12, and the other O’Neill children at the orphanage identified Jeffersonville, Indiana, as their former home. St. Vincent’s housed over 130 children at the time of the 1940 U.S. Census.
