City Hall

This postcard from the 1930s shows City Hall, with the Steel Mill in the background. In the early years of the city, the steel mill was quite engaged with the community, as the Superintendent of Gary Works (William Gleason) was also the head of Gary’s parks department, and the steel company made significant financial contributions to the city, including for the building of City Methodist Church. After the 1930s, however, US Steel showed a marked lack of interest in Gary civic affairs.
