This photo shows just a few of the many apartment buildings built in Gary during the 1920s. This era saw the addition of buildings and homes in the Horace Mann area, now a National Historic District. Located on the south side of 5th Avenue and directly across from the 5th Avenue apartments, homes around Horace Mann School, built in 1924, are unique for their “community planning and development” and architecture styles.
