South Side Family

In 1910, approximately when this photo was taken, Gary’s population was 49% foreign born, and an additional 22% had one or more foreign born parents. Most of the foreign born and those with one or more foreign-born parents lived on the South Side, which in general was a poorer area than the North Side. However, as this photo shows, some South Side houses were sturdy and substantial.
