Exterior 1870

Completed in 1839, St. Michael's is significant for its pointed arch windows (the earliest known example of Gothic Revival windows in Indiana), its steeple rising from the rear of the building (very uncommon in the US) and the "open book" ceiling within. This is among the earliest photos of the building shortly after it was enlarged by its Irish and German immigrant Catholic congregation in the 1860s.
