Slave Handbill

Even in free states slave handbills and advertisements in local newspapers were seen to alert residents of slave owners looking for runaway slaves. This example is sourced from Fayette County, Ohio where many anti-slavery supporters lived. Note how it says fifty dollars will be rewarded to any capture in an interior Ohio county, except for Fayette. Slave owners often had specific stipulations to what they are willing to pay where capture took place.
