Portrait of Stowe

This portrait of Harriet Beecher Stowe was taken in circa 1880. Author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Stowe became an ardent abolitionist figure with the publishing of her novel in 1852. The death of her son in 1849 opened her eyes to the sorrow enslaved mothers must have felt when separated from their children.
