Civil War soldier Samuel W. Van Nuys was promoted to Captain and placed on the General’s staff as Acting Adjutant General of the 4th U.S. Colored Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 3 Division, 18th Army Corps. He perished during a raid on Rebel defenses north of the river near the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia.
