In the early days of the Great Depression, Goble and Charlotte Gilbert and their children lived at 421 Broadway, in Jeffersonville, with Goble’s parents, John and Anna. The entire family is listed in this detail from the 1930 US Census. But this multigenerational support network was soon to fail, resulting in a catastrophe for the children, most of whom would be sent to an orphanage.
