Out of prison, the Gilberts' mother remarried and had more children. She died of sepsis in 1946. Charles Patrick, the oldest child who had gone to prison with his mother, had followed his father in joining the military, a path which provided entry into the middle class for many early twentieth century children. The younger children remained in the orphanage for the remainder of their childhoods.
