Much of this city block was at one time occupied by a 45-resident public orphanage. While the orphanage had room for 45 young people, census results suggest that it never operated at capacity. Despite stereotypes portraying orphans as outsiders in their communities, most children counted in the US Census at this address listed Indiana as their place of birth.
