By the 1920s, automobiles made travel between cities like Bloomington and Indianapolis much easier. At the same time, the Great Migration brought more Black people to Northern cities. The urban environment of Indianapolis and the college town of Bloomington were both incubators for jazz music, and there was a great deal of interchange between the two places.
