Crowds gather around the monument’s base during dedication ceremonies on May 15th, 1902. Note the sheer amount of flags and banners as the crowd gathers around the monument to American triumph. This outpouring of patriotism at the turn of the twentieth century was a way to unite a nation of people from differing ethnic and religious backgrounds. In this sense, the state transcended class, race, and religion.
